Will Smith Opens Up About New Music, His Critics, And His Wife In A New Interview

Rap-Up

We've all been following Will Smith's career since the 90s. His music was so upbeat, his show was hilarious, and basically all of his movies were super fun.

He's been such a big star for so long, and has done so much, it's easy to wonder what else he could possibly have planned for his life.

But as it turns out, he's looking to return to his roots and go back to music for a bit.

“I just started writing again, just tryna [sic] find the way to say the stuff that’s in my mind,” Smith said. “I’m burning again creatively, and I have outlets that I’ve never had before.”

Obviously he hasn't stopped acting. He actually gave this interview during a break from the set of Gemini Man, a movie he is filming in Budapest. He's kept busy throughout his impressive career, and now he has opened up about some of the things he's gone through.

He wants to make more music

“‘Summertime’ and ‘Brand New Funk’ are the two [classic] records I’ve made and I think I got more in me," Smith said. "I’m in the studio now and I have real things to say. That’s the thing that’s gonna be new and different and interesting about the music that I create going forward.”

Hopefully that means we're going to get more new music soon!

He's really gotten into social media

While some stars seem to shy away from it, Smith has discovered that it's better that he's open with his fans.

“Social media demands authenticity. Social media pushes you more and more into having you reveal what’s true. ‘Cause if you don’t, TMZ is going to. It’s a beautiful thing. I’m actually enjoying the push. Nobody’s happy that doesn’t get to be themselves. I’m enjoying the social demand for authenticity.”

He had a hard time with critics, but he knew he had to be himself

I've heard Smith's music get called "Happy Rap" before, but apparently Smith had a lot of issues dealing with people attacking his style.

“That was a difficult time coming up. … It was always difficult [to hear] people say I was soft and my music was cotton candy. I always wanted to fight to prove myself. Fighting yourself to maintain positivity is the hardest fight you ever gon’ [sic] have. That struggle to just stay my course, be the person in the world that I wanted to be no matter what people said. I started to call it offensive positivity.”

He didn't expect Fresh Prince to take off like it did

We all know now that it's a huge hit, but they couldn't have predicted just how big it would become.

“I had no idea that ‘Fresh Prince’ would have that kind of impact. When I look back on it, I can see. It was like, ‘Duh.’ The intercultural racism between the rich blacks and poor blacks and the idea of being uprooted and put into the full mainstream white world, I can see where those ideas would make for a rich show.”

His 20-year marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith is one of Hollywood's best relationships, and he's happy to talk about her

He's got nothing but praise for his wife of 20 years, saying nothing could ever split them up.

“We don’t even say we’re married anymore. We refer to ourselves as life partners, where you get into that space where you realize you are literally with somebody for the rest of your life. There’s no deal breakers. There’s nothing she could do—ever. Nothing that would break our relationship. She has my support till death and it feels so good to get to that space.”

It's always nice to see a 90s mega-star continue to thrive as the years go on, and of all the potential stars, Will Smith deserves it the most!
