'Top Gun' Sequel Gets A Release Date And A Title And We're On The Highway To The Danger Zone

Tom Cruise was easily the definitive star of the 80s and 90s. He had a lot of huge hits, but few were as amazing and iconic as Top Gun.

Watching them fly their planes and play beach volleyball was super entertaining, and because it's 2018, of course they are planning to bring it back in some way. Nothing is safe from a reboot, remake or sequel, especially if Tom Cruise has a say.

The Mission Impossible franchise is on its sixth movie now, with Cruise happily performing his own stunts and continuing to defy danger, but apparently that's not enough. He wants to return to the skies and bring back Maverick.

We were all a little skeptical when they first announced the Top Gun sequel, but we didn't really have much more than rumors to go on. Well, its really happening, and we know when.

It's not a remake, that seems to be certain, because Cruise will be be the main character once again. The sequel is set to start productions this summer, after Cruise finishes all of his obligations for Mission: Impossible - Fallout, and its official title is Top Gun: Maverick.

They've set the release date for July 12, 2019, but so far we don't know a whole lot about it. But Cruise has let a few details slip.

"Aviators are back, the need for speed. We're going to have big, fast machines. It's going to be a competition film, like the first one ... but a progression for Maverick," Tom Cruise said to Access Hollywood.

As for who will be costarring in the sequel, Cruise has kept quiet, but at least one of his former costars has expressed a lot of interest in coming back...

Val Kilmer is not above some shameless self promotion, because he wants nothing more than to rejoin the cast for the sequel. He's even posted a photo of himself wearing an Ice Man t-shirt, with the caption "still got it... just sayin..."

He's been fairly vocal about his enthusiasm about the project since the start. As soon as the sequel was announced, he shared a picture in his shades saying "I'm ready Tom - still got my Top Gun plaque! Still got the moves! Still got it!"

Even though Kilmer has been battling cancer, he's ready and willing to join up with the Naval Aviators to take over as Maverick's wing man. Rumors about his return are confusing, but honestly, I hope he gets to come back. It wouldn't be the same without him!

As for Kelly McGillis, she said she'd be open to doing a cameo even though she has largely stepped out of the limelight. She enjoys a simple life, but for Top Gun's sequel she said she'd be up for it. "Yeah, I'd cameo in it maybe!" she said to Independent but she's not sure if the director will ask her to appear.

Joseph Kosinski is set to direct. You may remember his work from Oblivion or the sequel to Tron. While neither of those movies did exceptionally well, here's hoping that this one is better.

The original movie was a huge box office hit, but who knows if they will be able to match that with this sequel. It's kind of a hit-or-miss type thing with these remakes, reboots, and sequels, but we have our fingers crossed!
