The 'Men In Black' Are Coming Back, But Will Smith And Tommy Lee Jones Aren't
The Men in Black are back but they are missing something we all thought they needed: The actual 'Men in Black' themselves. Sony has decided to reboot their popular franchise, but instead of doing another sequel, they have opted for a spinoff.
The original movie starred Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in a kind of odd-couple/buddy-cop action movie about aliens and the organization that helped keep them in control.
This was one of the first movies that Will Smith made after his TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air wrapped, and it really helped solidify him as a leading man.
The movie was absolutely hilarious and full of amazing moments that we will always remember.
But now, Sony will be trying something else that will play off the world we already know.
The new Men In Black movie is not a direct sequel, and apparently will not star Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones. The script will be written by the team who wrote Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight, Matt Holloway and Art Marcum.
The spinoff will apparently build on the world that the original was set in, but it will be based on new characters and villains that we haven't seen before.
They are comparing it to Jurassic World, as that was more of a franchise expansion than a sequel. It obviously turned out pretty great, so maybe we should be hopeful?
Steven Spielberg is the executive producer of the movie, along with Walter F. Parkes and LaurieMacDonald. Parkes recently said that "it’s so rare to get to the end of the script and know you’re holding a movie in your hands, but Art and Matt have written a spinoff that somehow is true to the core of the MiB world and yet expands the franchise to a fresh new place."
The release date for this movie will be May 17, 2019, so they are really trying to push this out quickly. People suspected that it might have been a crossover with 21 Jump Street, but apparently this is something completely different.
