Super Mario Is Coming To The Big Screen, And Hopefully It's Better Than The Last Time
Super Mario was an important part of everyone's childhood. Hours were spent playing games on our N64s, Super Nintendos and Game Boys, trying to navigate our way through the Mushroom Kingdom.
Of course, we all got a little too excited when it was announced that our favorite Italian plumbing brothers were getting their own TV show in 1990. We probably should have waited until after we saw it...because hoo boy, it was bad.
In 1993, we were subjected to the movie Super Mario Bros. starring John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins. To say it was sub par would be the understatement of the year.
I'm sorry, this is not a goomba.
Now, an announcement from Nintendo is giving us hope that better things are coming our way.
Nintendo announced today that they will be producing a new film based off Super Mario, and it will feature the characters we all know and love.
The film, which will be animated, isn't set to be released until at least September of 2020, but it's giving fans hopes that we might get the movie we always wanted.
Nintendo will team up with Illumination Entertainment, who have only had success in their past. Their films have grossed billions of dollars and been nominated for Oscars, Golden Globes, and Critics' Choice Awards. Some of these films include:
- The Despicable Me franchise
- Minions
- The Secret Life of Pets
- Dr. Seuss' The Lorax
Fan reaction has been less than enthusiastic, with responses like "Oh God, why?" and "Don't you remember what happened last time?"
Then, of course, there's this guy.
I hope they bring back the goomba that plays the harmonica
