An App Has Discovered How To Help Us Sleep Better, And The Answer Is 90s Movies
These days it feels as though we are all in a constant state of exhaustion. No matter what, we all seem to be more tired than we'd like to be.
Whether it's bad sleeping habits, interrupted sleep, or just simply being too busy, the fact of the matter is a lot of us who are in our late 20s and early 30s are just tired.
Why are we so tired though? Well, scientists claim that it's because we aren't sleeping well enough, but one company has found a way to combat that and it's kind of wild.
The self-care app is called Shine, and now it's going to be using our nostalgia-driven attention spans to help us sleep better.
That's right, the app is made with a function called "Sleep Stories" and their theory is by using one of these stories, you'll be able to fall asleep easier.
But how are these stories going after our nostalgia? Well, they're actually using all of your favorite 90s and early 2000s movies that you loved growing up and have already watched 100 times and turning them into a story you can listen to while you fall asleep.
So how does this app work? Well, it starts with a guided meditation to help you get relaxed, but that's when it gets good. After you're settled, the app started in on reciting a retelling of some of your favorite 90s and early 2000s movies!
They've got She's All That, they've got Love and Basketball, and most importantly, they've got Clueless.
Apparently these nostalgic trips you can take before you go to sleep are scientifically proven to not only help you sleep better, but to actually feel less anxious in general!
"Research has shown that nostalgia can ease our anxiety and loneliness, especially during moments of transition (looking at you, 20s and 30s)," the app wrote in the post announcing the retro sleep stories.
Why did the company decide to add this unique sleeping aid to their self-care app? Well, because of the recent studies that claim that stress, depression, and anxiety are at an all-time high, and because all of those issues are known to impact your sleep, they thoguht they could help.
Getting enough sleep can do wonders for your mental state, but to do so you need to know what you need. “When we thought of what we love falling asleep to, it was those movies we've seen 100 times,” Shine cofounders Marah Lidey and Naomi Hirabayashi told Bustle. “Those ‘90s and early 2000s hits play on our nostalgia… They're just fun enough you'll want to listen and just boring enough you'll fall asleep.”
The stories are told in soothing tones, and they can help you calm your anxious thoughts while you try to fall asleep.
“Our 2 million members have told us loud and clear: they're sleepy. They are busy, ambitious, and come bedtime? They're struggling to find rest in the midst of their anxious thoughts,” Lidey and Hirabayashi said. “We're pumped to launch Shine Sleep Stories to help people find that precious REM more easily.”
I don't know about you, but I am in desperate need of a good night's sleep, so I will definitely have to look into this!
