On This Day In 1995 - We Count Down Billboard 100's Top 10 Tracks

In September 1995, most of us were just getting back into the routine of homework, wishing for the long days of summer that seemed to fly by way to fast.

We were all wearing baggy overalls, puka shell necklaces, and platform shoes or plaid miniskirts. Michael Jordan returned to the NBA, 170 countries agree not to make or sell nuclear weapons technology and Ebay was born.

10. As I Lay Me Down, Sophie B. Hawkins

Written by her father, this was one of Sophie's two biggest hits of the 90's. It was featured on Dawson's Creek, Party of Five and the 1995 film Now and Then starring the a stellar cast including  Rosie O'Donnell, Demi Moore, Thora Birch and Christina Ricci.


9. Only Wanna Be With You, Hootie & The Blowfish

Darius Rucker was THE voice for this song. I can't imagine hearing anyone else singing it quite like he can. do you remember which FRIENDS episode the band made an appearance in?


8. I Got 5 On It, Luniz

Their most famous song to date - you might recognize  Kool and the Gang's "Jungle Boogie" from 1978, sampled in the track.


7. Boombastic/In The Summertime, Shaggy

As well as being top in the US, this song was hot in the UK, Ireland, Sweeden New Zealand, and Australia. After being featured in a Levi's commercial, the song skyrocketed on the charts.


6. I Can Love You Like That, All-4-One

What girl could resist these powerful lyrics? These smooth singing quartet sold over 600,000 copies and the single was certified


5. Runaway, Janet Jackson

Janet - is there anything she can't do? Janet was the first female in Billboard's history to debut in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. She sold over 800,000 copies and the single was certified Gold.


4. Waterfalls, TLC

We all know the lyrics to this song, by TLC. Another first for the ladies, this song was the first to reference AIDS in it's lyrics - a hot button topic at the time. It was also the first song to stay at the top of the MTV Video Monitor Chart for a full month.


3. Kiss From A Rose ("Batman Forever"), Seal

This song almost didn't make it. Originally written in 1987, Seal says he was "embarrassed by it." It wasn't until after it was released as a single for the Batman Forever soundtrack, that the song really took hold of fans' hearts.


2. You Are Not Alone, Michael Jackson

Before falling to number two, this song was Michael Jackson's 13th and final number one hit in the US during his lifetime.


1. Gangsta's Paradise (From "Dangerous Minds"), Coolio Featuring L.V.

This song was the number one biggest selling singles of 1995. Coolio won a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance, two MTV Video Music Award's for Best Rap Video and for Best Video from a Film and a Billboard Music Award for the song and album.

It is one of the best selling singles of all time, having sold over 5.7 million copies worldwide.
