Nintendo Switch Online Looks Like Netflix for Retro Games

We love retro games, especially ones put out by Nintendo. The company probably has the best library of games that, despite being decades old in some cases, have stood the test of time and are still fun today.

We've already talked about the Nintendo Virtual Console and how people both love the fact that it lets them get access to the old school games they love, but also hate the fact that there are plenty of games that get left out, or how the service barely gets anything added.

Well, Nintendo's upcoming online service for the Nintendo Switch looks like it might finally have the solution to this.

Originally announced ahead of the system's launch back in March, Nintendo confirmed that the Switch will eventually be getting a paid online service, not unlike its competitors, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.

They also announced that the service would include access to a different retro game every month, but people became less excited when they said they would only have access to each game for a month, and that's it.

Except, it looks like they've changed their minds! According to Kotaku, this week, Nintendo took to their Twitter account to announce that the Nintendo Switch's online service will:

1) Be delayed to 2018 (boo!)

2) Only be $20 per year compared to Xbox One and PS4's $60 (yay!)

3) Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will have ongoing access to a library of classic games with added online play. Users can play as many of the games as they want, as often as they like, as long as they have an active subscription. (WAT?!?!)

Read that last one again. Multiple games (with online play added in!), as often as you want, so long as you have a subscription.

Essentially, Nintendo seems to have listened to the criticism about their initial idea for the Switch's online, and have given something a lot better. Depending on how many games are available for the service at launch (right now they've confirmed NES games), this could very well be what Nintendo fans have wanted: a Netflix-like service for its old school games!

While they haven't said much else about the subject, this is obviously very exciting news. The idea of paying less than $2 a month for access to games like Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Mario Kart 64, and Super Metroid whenever you want is something retro gamers have dreamed about for years now.
