Jamie Lee Curtis Reveals What Convinced Her To Come Back To 'Halloween' Again
The original Halloween movie is one of the most iconic scary movies to have ever been made. Jamie Lee Curtis' performance as Laurie Strode, aka the only babysitter you should trust your children with, made the slasher movie stand the test of time.
Okay, maybe part of it was the iconic villain of Michael Myers, but it just wouldn't have been the same without the tough and capable Laurie.
When they announced they were going to be making another Halloween movie, this time bringing back Curtis in her legendary role, people got curious.
Normally a revival like this gets attacked by the fans of the original, with people wanting them to let it go and leave it be. But with Curtis back in charge, there was too much hype for people to pretend they weren't excited.
The new movie is being released on October 19th, which means we are just days away. Ahead of the release, Curtis has revealed what brought her back to the role in the first place, or I suppose it's who brought her back.
Curtis was actually on vacation with her husband when she first heard of the project, but her initial discussion was actually with someone who isn't involved with the movie at all.
Jake Gyllenhaal is a longtime friend and "unofficial godson" to Curtis, and he visited her while she was on vacation to ask her if she would consider taking a call from director David Gordon Green.
Green was apparently going to be calling Curtis, and Gyllenhall really wanted her to at least hear what he had to say. Gyllenhall worked with Green on the movie Stronger in 2017, and after calling it the "greatest experience of his career" he had faith that Green could do a great job with the reboot.
She agreed to hear what he had to say and they got along right away. Curtis actually revealed that Green reminded her of the director of the original movie, John Carpenter.
"They’re both laid back and don’t take themselves too seriously," Curtis said.
She continued by explaining how this new movie will bring it back to the original, and basically reset the timeline, erasing all of the sequels that came after the movie, and acting as this is the only one.
“We shed all of that other stuff and just went back to what made the original so great,” she said. “John [Carpenter] didn’t write most of those films, so it was just all these new people making up stories. But with this one, we just literally cut the line. Whether or not people loved or hated those stories has no relevance to this movie.”
She even goes on to criticize the sequel she was in. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later was a followup to the original where she once again played Laurie, but the project started to turn into something she didn't like when Carpenter was no longer involved.
“H20 started out with best intentions, but it ended up being a money gig,” she revealed. “The film had some good things in it. It talked about alcoholism and trauma, but I ended up really doing it for the paycheck.”
But for this new version, she says that it's much better.
"We just went back to story and character,” said Curtis. “It felt like being on the original one, where no one was getting paid and we were just hungry to do the work.”
