'Top Gun' Sequel Announces Who Will Be Playing Goose's Son
We've all been anxiously awaiting details of this Top Gun sequel, and once we got that little preview of it with that first photo we couldn't help but get super psyched.
The movie is set to be released in just over a year, on July 12th, 2019, and filming is currently in progress.
The first shot has Tom Cruise back in the uniform, holding his iconic helmet, which of course says "Maverick" across it.
We know that the sequel will be called Top Gun: Maverick, so obviously he's going to be the center of the movie, but he's not alone.
Val Kilmer is also set to return as Iceman, which is great because we all know that Maverick needs a wingman. But there's a new face joining the crew with a big connection to the original characters.
Everyone remembers Goose. It's impossible to forget that horrific accident that led to his death. But it turns out that there is at least a little part of Goose that will carry on into the new movie.
His son is now going to be a character in the movie, and they've announced that the actor who will be playing him is Miles Teller.
You may remember him from movies like Divergent, Fantastic Four, and That Awkward Moment. He's going to play Goose's son, whose name we don't know yet, but he's going to be a big part of the movie.
Actors Glen Powell and Nicholas Hoult were also fighting for the role, but Teller managed to secure the role. While obviously it's basically impossible for Anthony Edwards to return, at least there's someone who connects Maverick to his old friend.
The movie is going to feel different than how it did in the 80s, but that's because a lot has changed. Director Joseph Kosinski hinted at what the plot would be about.
“The navy is very different now than it was in 1986. Back then, they hadn't been in any war for 15 or 20 years at that point. The tone of that movie and what those guys were doing was very different.
"Now, here in 2017, the Navy's been at war for 20 years. It's just a different world now, so you can't remake the first movie.
"That being said, I certainly want to recreate the experience of that movie, which gives you a front-seat into the world of Naval aviation and what it's like to be in a fighter jet. The approach is going to be appropriate for the times we live in."
So chances are we're going to have Teller come in with a new generation of pilots learning from Maverick, but we won't know for sure until they give us some more!
Who else is ready to hear more about the movie?
Details about Top Gun: Maverick are coming out slowly, first the title, then the first picture, now the new cast. It's exciting, and we can't wait to see what's next!
