Let's Get Down To Business Because Disney Finally Announced Who's Playing Mulan
Let’s get down to business, because Disney has cast its leading lady in its live-action remake of 1998’s Mulan.
For those who’ve been living under a rock for their entire childhood, Mulan is about a teenager who disguises herself as a young man to take her father’s place when he is called to war. Through Mulan’s tenacity and clever endeavors, she single-handedly saves China.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, casting directors traveled across the world to find their perfect Hua Mulan. The women auditioning for the role had to meet three qualifications: the ability to speak English, credible martial arts skills, and most importantly, star quality.
After a year-long search, Chinese actress Liu Yifei (also known as Crystal Liu) landed the titular role, out of nearly 1,000 other candidates.
Nicknamed “Fairy Sister” by the Chinese public, fans can put their fears to rest as this announcement has squashed the rumors about the studio attempting to whitewash the beloved Disney classic.
Fans have already voiced their excitement over the studio’s casting decision.

mulan means so much to me. that movie formed me as a person. I've been so adamantly against the remake (especially w/o the music) but....liu yifei looks exactly like the real life mulan I always envisioned growing up. I am shook pic.twitter.com/oiDekXE36P

While others are pointing out it shouldn’t be ground-breaking Hollywood casts a star that is culturally accurate with the role they’re playing.
It's a little heartbreaking how happy I am that Disney cast a Chinese woman to play a Chinese woman. #Mulan

the fact that we have to say "whew I'm so glad Hollywood casted a chinese actress to play Mulan" explains something very problematic

also, when can we have chinese american representation? Liu Yifei is amazing all around but she isn't American, we still need a voice
Movies have devolved into white washed nonsense so much that the Mulan team is being praised for casting a Chinese woman to play an actual Chinese woman
