10 Roles You Didn't Realize Were Played By Luke Skywalker
Mark Hamill has been a household name since 1977, thanks to his iconic role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, which he recently returned to with the new movies! However, his career extends far beyond Star Wars, and in particular, these 10 roles are ones that we all loved, and often probably didn't even realize it was him.
Batman: The Animated Series - The Joker
The other role he's probably best-known for, Hamill has lent his voice to Gotham City's Clown Prince of Crime many times since the early 90s. Be it in cartoons like Batman: The Animated Series or the Arkham series of video games, his Joker is considered by many to be the definitive take on the character; equal parts funny, mysterious, and menacing.
Jeannie - Cory Anders
Before getting his biggest break as Luke Skywalker, Hamill voiced the protagonist in this cartoon followup of the hit sitcom I Dream of Jeannie. The series only released 16 episodes, but stayed in syndication for a few years.
Wing Commander Series - Col. Christopher "Maverick" Blair
A video game series best known for mixing space opera storytelling with starship battles, Origin Systems began recording live actors to portray the characters in Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger. Hamill was cast as the series' protagonist, Col. Christopher Blair. He would return to the role for Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom and Wing Commander Academy.
Spider-Man - Hobgoblin
Apparently never one to pass up a role as a comic book villain, Hamill played Jason Macendale, AKA Hobgoblin. You can definitely hear him slip into some of his Joker voice during this performance.
Some of his later roles are also pretty surprising...
The Incredible Hulk - Gargoyle
One of the oldest Hulk antagonists from the comics, Gargoyle is a Soviet scientist who was mutated by radiation and has developed extreme intelligence.
Justice League - Solomon Grundy
Believe it or not, Hamill has voiced DC Comics characters other than The Joker! In the Justice League cartoons from the late 90s he was also the voice of Solomon Grundy, the giant undead brute named after the famous poem.
Castle In The Sky - Muska
The first film by Japanese animation juggernaut Studio Ghibli (best-known for Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away), when Castle in the Sky was finally released in the West by Disney, they went all-out for the film's English dub. Hamill appeared as lead villain Muska among a cast that included Anna Paquin, James Van Der Beek, Cloris Leachman, and Mandy Patinkin.
Avatar: The Last Airbender - Fire Lord Ozai
The ultimate villain of what is considered one of the best cartoons of all time, Firelord Ozai is the warlord ruler of the Fire Nation who has disowned his son Zuko and slaughtered thousands in his quest for world domination. He's one of the most menacing villains in the history of animation, and Hamill does a great job with his voice.
Metalocalypse - Senator Stampingston / Mr. Salacia
Hamill pulls double-duty as two members of The Tribunal, the organization dedicated to monitoring the metal band Dethklok's activities. He plays both Senator Stampingston, the groups diplomatic main speaker, and the mysterious Mr. Salacia, the superpowered, evil leader of the group.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - C***nocker
Parodying himself and superheroes in general, Hamill stars in the in-universe Bluntman and Chronic movie as the Hemp Knight's main antagonist, C***nocker. He even has a lightsaber duel with Silent Bob!
