10 Facts That Will Test Whether You Still Know What They Did Last Summer

Columbia Pictures

After the success of Scream in the mid-90s, a massive wave of imitators came out that all tried to capitalize on the "teenage slasher" craze in horror movies. The best-known of these was almost definitely I Know What You Did Last Summer, which featured an all-star cast of 90s mainstays, including Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Anne Heche.

While the movie feels kind of dated now, we still love it for reasons we can't explain. However, turns out there's a lot of interesting facts behind the making of it, and we're pretty sure even big fans of the movie might not know these 10 things!

It's actually based on a book from the 70s

It's pretty different; the teens actually hit a small child with their car, who (thankfully) doesn't die.

The author of the book absolutely hated the movie

NY Daily News

Lois Duncan has been open about her hate of it, complaining that they turned a suspense thriller into a slasher movie. This especially sat poorly with her since her daughter was murdered in 1989.

The script was by the guy who wrote Scream

Kevin Williamson actually wrote the script for I Know What You Did Last Summer before he wrote Scream, but it wasn't picked up for production until after Scream became a huge hit.

The movie is how Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. met

They hit it off and have been married since 2002! They have two children together.

The facts just get crazier from here...

"Dawson's Beach" is an intentional reference to Dawson's Creek

Columbia Pictures

The movie could've used more crying Dawson.

Melissa Joan Hart turned down a role in the movie

NY Daily News

She was offered the role of Julie James, which ultimately went to Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Jamie Lee Curtis came by the set to support Jennifer Love Hewitt

The two had recently co-starred in House Arrest, and Curtis not only wished her luck on her first horror film, but came by the set every day after shooting to give her a hug.

Nobody dies in the original book

Columbia Pictures

Not even the kid who gets hit by the car.

The ice inside the boat storage is actually gelatin

Giphy

It was made that way so Jennifer Love Hewitt could move in it freely.

The ads for the movie got Columbia Pictures sued

Miramax

The original trailer had the line "From the creator of Scream." Miramax, who owned Scream, successfully sued over this, and the line was removed from all advertising.
